A World of Diversity: How Culture & Heritage Affect our Food Choices

Below discuss where you grew up.  How did that location affect what you eat as a child and now?  Then discuss what your cultural heritage is (For example, I am Norweigian).  What are some foods that are common in your family's culture?  Do you like them?  If you don't know about the foods of your heritage, what would you like to find out?

  3. We eat a lot off beef and pork in our family. We eat alot of it because we raise all of our own beef and pork. I dont know what kinds of food we eat based on my culture because I'm not sure what my culture is.Lane

  6. I grew up on the Rez my whole life and I only moved once, but that was only to a bigger house a couple of miles away. I still live in that house to this day. I don't think that this affected anything that I eat to much. I still eat things like frybread and menudo or tripe. I guess you could also say that we had to eat commodities for a while but I don't think that I eat anything to different from other people. We still eat all the meat we get from hunting and we also eat whatever food we get form Pierre. So that is what I pretty much eat but I don't think that covers any of the French blood in me.

I grew up twenty miles south of this town. This really influenced things I ate a lot. There was not a lot of avialability. I grew up eating a lot of vegatables, beef, pork, and chicken. My mom also had a lot of cook books from her German Grandparents. There is why I eat Sour Cream Chocolate Cake and a Cabbage Boil.

  9. I grew up all over the state of South Dakota. It was the lifestyle of South Dakota, so we ate a lot of natural and South Dakota lifestyle food. We also ate a lot of Italian and Spanish food. I am of German and English heritage. I really don't know of any food that's common in my family's culture. We definitely don't eat any of the cultural cuisine that is in the roots of our family. I don't really need to know the cultural food from my heritage, because I like everything I eat now, and don't need to try anything new!

  11. I grew up in South Dakota; around the Highmore area, I have been there my whole life.

Being in Highmore really hasn't affected my whole eating choices; except we certaintly don't eat a lot seafood and tropical fruits; and such.

My cultural heritage is mostly German; although we don't eat a lot of the food.

I really don't want to find out a lot about my heritage because I like what I eat.

  12. Morgan...Well grew up more in Minnesota. There is alot of dairy and turkey/chicken farms where I lived. So, I had alot of dairy foods and turkey and chicken. Then when we moved here we had alot more beef products, in which we didn't get from the store anymore. We also raise pigs so we had plenty of pork.
I'm Irish and German. Sausage is a common food in Germany. My family love sausage, but we don't get it that often. I know for sure that in Irland that potatoes are very common. We love potatoes. From mashed potatoes to potato soup. I love food all together. I love trying new things.
