BLOG #3: UTENSILS/MEASURING

1. Why should I worry whether or not a student knows the names and uses of the lab equipment?

2. "If you were lost by yourself in the forest for three weeks, what three pieces of kitchen equipment do you think would be the most important for survival?  Why?"

3.  What did you learn in the Crunchy Munchy Goop Lab?!

    1. you would have to worry because if they don't know what the lab was about they might not do the project right.
    2. knife, cooking pan, and plates because you can have stuff to cook and put food on and to cut food.
    3. it was hard to make the goop because they was not the right amount of measurement

  2. So they can use the equipment right and safely. I would bring a knife for safety, a lighter to start fires and a pot to cook in. There are diffrent ways to measure things. Lane Feller

  3. so they do not use the wrong item for somthing. a kife, a castiron skilet, and a a deep pot. tha true mesuraments are mportant.

  4. so that if you ask them to get something they will know what it is and where it may be. i would bring a torch, knives, and pot. to work as a team and listen to others one what they thought was the correct measurements. Taz

  5. If some student doesn't understand what something is in the kitchen, that could get them extremely confused, and they would be messing everything up. If they didn't know what certain equipments in the kitchen do, then they could be messing around with the stove, and something bad happens, leading up to a FIRE! Knowing what everything in the kitchen does is very important because it can affect not only the person [who is messing in the kitchen], but also the class as well.

If I was stuck in the woods, the three things that I would bring would be a spork, because I couldn't decide between a spoon and a fork, so I made compromise. Then I'd bring a solar powered microwave because I could make squirrel. Finally I'd bring a solar powered toaster, to make squirell also.

I learned in the Crunchy Munchy Goop Lab, that measurements are very vital to the way that things are run. If you cook without measurements then everytime you cooked the recipe or "product" would be different.

  6. You should worry about the things like a student not knowing what the names or uses of lab equipment, because they might not use the right things for the recipe. They also might hurt themselves by doing something wrong. It can also make things go faster.

If I were going to be lost in a forest for three week I would have taken a serrated knife,a pan, and a stone to start a fire. These things can all help in living by getting the use of clean food.

I learned that it is hard to make a type of food with made up measurements. It might not come out right or it could harm somebody. It is way easier when you actually have the opportunity to work with real measurments.

If the student does not know what the things in the lab are for, they will have a difficult time participating in the lab. They may do something incorrectly they could have vert hazardous consequences.
I would take things like a knife, a knife sharpener, and a grill lighter. The knife is for chopping and slicing. The sharpener is to keep it sharp. The grill lighter is to start a fire to cook.
That I hate that lab! There were no measuremnts and no specific directions so you would never get a very good end product.

  8. Joey, If a student dont know where anything is they shouldnt be in the kitchen.

A lighter, a knife, and a pan. I would take a lighter to start fires and to start things on fire. The knife to cut things. The pan to cook things.

They used things that werent real. They also mixed things that probably shouldnt be mixed.

    1. So that you will have the correct amount of ingredients for your recipe, and so that it will make things less hectic when other people know what things are called.
    2. I think that I would want to have a lighter, a sharp knife, and a pan.
    3. We learned that in a recipe, it is easier to have exact measurements instead of measurements that dont have a specific amount.

    1. You should worry about students knowing about things in the kitchen because, they won't know how to use something and it will be an unsafe enviroment for others. They could also make a big mess.
2.A knife- you can use it to cut things and make things. A pot- I can boil water in it and i also can cook meat and stuff in it. A lighter- so i can start fires.
    3. What I learned was that it was confusing to make something with out the right measurments.

  11. You should be worried, because they might be using the equipment wrong and could hurt the equipment or themselves. I would bring a knife a lighter and a pot. I would, because I can start a fire, use the knife to kill animals or to make tools, and a pot to collect water and cook food. It is easier to make something with real directions. Michael

  13. So that if you ask them about it they know what it is and where to find it if cooking.
Knife, Pan, Water Jug, i would skin animals with the knife, cook em on a pan, and use the jug to get water
i learned to make use with what you have and to use common sense

  15. 1.so that you know that the students know what they need to use, and so you know that they willbe safe.2.i think that a pan a bowl and spoon would be most important, because then i could cook or fry things, and i would be abe to make soup or soemthing when I wanted.3. i learned that it is easier to make things, when you know what the exaxt measurements are.

    1. You would want to make sure they know because they might cook something wrong.
    2. I would bring a knife so I can use it to kill for food, a pan so I can have something to cook in, and matches so I could start a fire to cook.
    3. I was gone they day they did the lab so I don't know what it was or what they did.

  17. 1. It is important for students know the names of kitchen equipment that way the other people working with you no what you are talking about.
    2. If I was by myself in the forest and had to cook I would want 2 knives, 1 pot, and matches. I need the knives to kill and clean the animals I would kill. The pot to cook them over the fire, and matches to get a fire started.
    3. I thought the lab was fun and that we made really good rice krispy treats.

I think students should know about the names and uses of lab equipment so when they are given a recipe or asked to cook something they know how to use the equipment and what its called. if I were to be lost in the forest for three weeks I would have a cup, a pan, and a spoon because I can use the cup for water. I could also use the pan for boiling water to decontaminate it and to cook my food. the spoon would be very useful in stiring the food, eating the food, and if I get bored, carving wood. in the lab I learned how to make rice crispy treats in our own way.

  19. 1. If a recipe calls for a certain object needed, then it would be needed for the student to know what it is and what it does. If you measure a liquid in the dry cups it could cause the outcome to not be as it should.

    2. I think a pot, spoon, and knife would be the most important so you can cook your meals. Also by having a knife you could cook and cut your prey in the pot while stirring it with your spoon.

    3. Recipes are very important and you should follow them very precisely. If you dont, then it wont turn out as well as you like.

  20. 1. So you know how to properly use them

    2. knife, knife sharpener, and a bowl. I think these are the most importent tools for survival

3.That it is hard to make something without a recipes

    1. I would worry if someone does not know what they are doing in the kitchen. They need to know what each thing does to it could be done right.
    2. If I was lost in the forest I would have a water purifier because drinking clean water is good for you. I would also have a knife and a bowl or something similar so I can carry water or anything I find useful.
    3. I learned in the lab that you have to know measurements of the food it taste good. You don’t want it to take like it has too much flour or anything else.

    1. You are allowing the students to work in the kitchen. If you allow them to do so they need to know how the equipment works and when to properly use it. They need to show that they are responsible before you can trust them.
    2. I would first of all bring a knife. A knife can be used for many things, such as killing animals or even cutting up brush to create a fire. A pot would be the next thing I would bring. By bringing a pot I'll be able to cook whatever I have for food. Lastly I would bring a grill lighter. I could use it to keep warm and to cook my food.
    3. I learned that it is really important to have a recipe to follow. Without a recipe you are left guessing what you should put in and how much and by doing that you really don't know how your "creation" is going to turn out.

    1. You should be worred if they are unaware of what the items are because whoever is using them needs to know how to use them the correct way. Also when cooking you need to know what the items are so when you are reading the directions and it tells you to use an item you will know what to use and how to use it correctly and safely.

    2. If I was lost for 3 weeks I think one of the three things I would most certainly bring is a knife. This one is an easy answer for survival. The second thing would be a pot. Third, I would bring is a lighter, because I could start a fire to keep myself warm and also I could start the fires to cook my food.

    3. Well, I learned that you might argue with your members a little bit over the measurements and how much we wanted to use and also what the steps were. You get things done a lot more quickly when you have directions to follow and the correct measurements. It's good if you do a lot of cooking because then when it comes to situations like this where you dont have a recipe or steps to follow you can use your cooking skills and cook your food off of the stuff you know.

    1. So they know the importance and the use of each instrument.
    2. Knife, pot, and lighter. Knife because it has many different important uses for survival, pot to cook in and to boil water to purify it, and lighter to start fires.
    3. You need to use correct measurements to get a good end result.
