Blog #1: Nutrition & Wellness

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 23 % of South Dakota high-school students are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight.  Nationally, “obesity rates continue to rise in the United States .  Since 1980, being overweight has doubled for children and tripled for adolescents.  Being overweight puts children and teenagers at greater risk for developing type 2 diabetes, risk factors for heart disease at an earlier age, and other health conditions including asthma, sleep apnea, and decreased self esteem.”  (National Conference of State Legislatures – Childhood Obesity Update – 2005)   This Nutrition and Wellness course is designed to help students develop eating behaviors that will have a positive affect on their current and future lifestyles.

Comment on this blog by first writing your opinion of the statistics above.  What do you feel has caused this rise in overweight people?  What can we do to prevent this problem from getting worse?  What does wellness mean to you?  Use complete sentences.

  1. People are overweight because we live in a very "fast-pace" world, and everyone thinks that they are in a hurry. Due to this belief people will go for the food that is easily-available. Foods today, are also not very "homemade" and contain more sugar and such which aren't good for the person who sits and eats all of these foods.

The only way to prevent people from eating these foods is to introduce them to healthier foods, that aren't just good for them but also their wallet (if that was a problem for people). People need to realize that eating good foods isn't a "hastle", and really doesn't take that much time.

Wellness to means when a person has the healthy amount of calorie intake, and exercise every day! It's when someone has a healthy mind, and body that are reflected by the things that people eat. This just follows the saying "You are what you eat".

  3. I think the statistics above are right. I think that fast food helped with the overweight in people. We can prevent this by making fast food healthier. Wellness is where people are well. Joey

  4. The statistics that are shown are a wake up call. I did not know that the nubers were so high and growing. I think that the numbers have grown because of our fast pace lives. We have less time to prepare meals, so we eat alot of fast food, which is unhealthy. The fast food companies need to have more healthy food for us to choose from. To me, wellness means being healthy. 5. I feel that the reason for the rise in the number of obesity in children and adolescents, has come from the new technology. Technology has made work easier, thus people don't have to exercise so much. It can also allow them to sit around doing nothing for long periods of time. I do kind of find the rise in statistics a little high and wish that the number would drop. It would be pretty hard to find a way to prevent this. One thing that you can do is give the kids a P.E class every year that they are in school. You could also try to those who are having the problem to participate in some kind of program to help them. You can also get those who are in danger of becoming obese, to participate in a program, so that they could happen. Wellness to me, is pretty important. It seems like you can do so much more when you are healthy.

Alot of people are overweight because there is some many fast food places. People don't stay home and eat as much, they just go out and eat. Not many people exercise or work out anymore. Alot of time its just the people we can't provent it much. Its the hard to stop people from eating junk food all the time. It is there choice to not exercise and eat unhealthy food. For them to stop their unhealthy habbits they need to start up healthy habbits. They need to stay home and eat healthy foods. They need to exercise more. So its more up to them if they want to do it or not.
I never think of wellness much. One of the reasons that I'm in sports is to stay fit and exercise. I kinda watch what I eat. I try not to eat to much greasy and unhealthy food. I eat alot of fruits and veggies.

some of the reasons that people are over weight is because they are lazy or dont care about what there body looks like. if people would exercise and eat right. they wouldn't have to worry about there weight.

  9. I think that the statistics are accurate because the number continues to rise of overweight people over the years. More people have become overweight I think because fast food places are just more convenient for people that live busy life styles, and people don’t exercise as much as they need to. To prevent this problem from becoming any worse people could start to exercise more and develop better eating habits. In my opinion wellness means eating healthy and exercising on a daily basis...Ashlie

  13. The statics are probably right. The fast food industry has been the main reason. We can inform the people how to eat healthier. Wellness means alot to many people including me.

  14. Rachel- I think that is bad how high South Dakota statistics are. I think that people do know how to live healthy but they just are too lazy to change their habits to live healthier. I think that if people learn how to live healthy when they are younger then they will not be overweight because they will not have to totally change their habits. Wellness to me is being healthy and making right choices to live a healthier life style.

  15. the statisics above are true and they are caused McDonalds!!!!!!!!!! Something should be changed about it. McDonalds and fast food are the problem. We should make more homemade food and make the fast food businesses more accountable to make them more healthy. Wellness is about staying healthy and keeping you not sick

  16. I think that the statistics are correct and that everyone should know about them. I think that all the fast food in America is making everyone overweight. To overcome this problem I think we all need to eat healthier and excerise. Wellness to me is very important to me because staying healthy is important to your body and so you can live a long healthy life.

  17. shawn--i think that the cause for overweight people in out counrty is because there is so many fast food joints in america. there really isnt a solution to this because fast food places have so many stores around the country. the only way to stop people rom eating at fast food places is to tell people what they are really eating.

  18. Kim- I think that there is a lot more fast food places that people eat. It is a lot easier for people that go places often to just drive through somewhere. The food is a lot more unhealthy for you and if people eat it a lot then they may become overweight. To help make this better the fast food places should start to sell healthier foods. People may not take them but they will still have the option to get them. Wellness is very important because eating right can keep you healthy and also it might help you live longer.

I think that with the rising production of fast food and the ease of getting unhealthy food is making these stats increase. I think we can fix this by taking more time to watch what we eat and eat healthy things. To me wellness means having a healthy lifestyle

I believe the rise in percenages of overweight people is caused by the lifestyle you live at home. Many people today live a very fast paced life and find it much easier to just stopf at a fast food place and eat. This way when they go home they dont have to cook anything for supper and dont have to worry about it being so late. I feel that part of the cause it that todays people are just lazy and would rather sit and watch tv instead of going outside and doing something active. One way to help this problem would be to excerise and be an active person and to eat healthier. Wellness means how you live and how healthy your living!

  22. i think that the Statisitics are right especially for South Dakota, but it is much better than many of the states with more people in them have a higher percentage of obese people in them because the cities are so cramped and have so very little area to move and then drive around just to sit in the middle of a road blocked with cars.

there being so much more lazy people who want to do nothing more than sitting and eating.

  23. I feel that McDonalds has effected the united states. Even our school doesn't make any food all we do is buy it. We should start making our own food that would start stopping obesity. Wellness means taking care of your body.

I think that the reason why the statistics are like that is because people dont know enough about nutrition and wellness. It is very important to know how to eat healthy. The cause is not knowing how to eat healthy and people eat fast food a lot more than they should. We just need to learn more about what to eat. Wellness is a very important thing.

  25. I think that people do know how to live healthy but they just don't want to. They think that it takes too much time trying to change their diet and changing their life style. But I think that if people did change it then they would be way healthier in the long run.

  26. People dont understand how eat healthy and stay active. They dont make time to work out and stay fit. Wellness is away of life that you have to keep in order to have healthy life style.

I think that these are very upsetting statistics. It is horible that adults have tripled and children have doubled. South Dakota people should not have that high of percetage of overweight people we should get active. I feel the rise of these statistics us pure laziness. We should try to stress the ways a better healthier life would make your life so much better. Wellness to me is important because I am in sports and it helps me alot.

I think that people now days are just lazy and don't do anything to help themselves and if they play games they should make a game that is like exercise because they will buy it if its a game and those statistics look like they are right and hope we can change that.

  32. Kimberly,
I think so many people are over weight because there are so many fast food restaurants. It could also be because so many people are lazy and don't want to do anything. We can prevent this issue by having a free exercising
in our community. We could also have less fast food restaurants. Wellness to means that you keep you body in shape and you keep it healthy and fit so you don't become over weight.

I feel that people are causing the rise in overweight people. we have the choice to stay away from unhealthy foods but we choose to consume them anyway. we can start teaching our young children about eating right before they get fat. wellness means everything to me. i am an athlete and like to keep my body healthy for sports. i do not want to be fat

I think the thing that has caused the rise of ovrweight people is the price of fatty fast food resturant prices. I think what we should do to prevent this from getting worse is to raise the price of unhealthy foods and lower the price of healthy foods. Wellness to me means that you keep you body in good shape and eat right your not just consuming more that you need.

  35. JULY I think that the nation has to learn that fast food laces are bad and tat that is one of the cases of kids being overweight. I also think that another cause of it is that the parents are too lazy to maket their own food. I think that the parents should make good healthy food all the time, because if they dont, then all the kids in the future will eventually overweight. I hope that parents can do this, otherwise in the future, kids willl think that its okay to buy fast food all the time, and it isn't okay at all. wellness is very important to me, and I hope that parents will understand that they need to stop buying fast food.

I feel that the only real way to prevent overweight is to get the word out about the dangers of obesity. You can not really prevent children from getting obesity but you can tell them how they can prevent it. Sports and other activities would help prevent obesity and would be fun. You can't really make a child stay healthy unless they want to it really is their opinion not yours. So I believe the only really way to win the war against obesity is to spread the word.

I believe that today, with the technology we have, people are becoming lazier. Also, there is more kinds of unhealthy foods available to the public, that plays a huge roll in the health and overweightness in our population. To prevent this I believe that we could really make it a big deal. We could post signs all around the world that tells what is really made into those foods you eat. It can tell them how electronics affect your lifestyle. I believe that would really impact the way people think about their desicions. I like to be healthy and eat healthy as well. Exercising and being active is a huge part in my life and i really encourage everyone to get up, be active, and eat healthy!

These numbers are really getting out of control. As an evolving country you would think that we would be able to obtain a healthy population. I truly think it is the advancement in technology that is causing more and more people to be driven to an unhealthy lifestyle. I think we could reduce this problem by getting rid of some of the technology in our life and focusing on being more active. Technology has caused us all to sit for hours on end doing nothing but staring at a screen. Wellness is important to me. I really do my best to focus on being active in as many physical activities as possible, whether it's playing a sport or just going outside.

These statistics are somewhat shocking but also not all surprising because it seems that people don't eat the way they should. I feel the cause is that people aren't very well educated about nutrition and wellness so they have trouble having a healthy lifestyle. I think that if we educated the people more and show them healthy alternatives they will be healthier. Also I feel people aren't getting enough exercise so we need to encourage more physical activity for the people. Wellness to me means that its your overall well being as a person.

My thought on the statistics stated above is really disappointing. People should know what they are eating. I think that the cause of obesity rising is because people dont exactly know how to eat healthy and to maintain a healthy body. People rarely know what they are eating and what is inside of their food. Another cause could be that people tend to eat when they are stressed or bored. We can prevent this problem by staying active all the time and when you are bored just find something to do instead of eat. Another thing we can do is learn more about the foods we consume and what is inside of them. Wellness is important to me because I like to pay attention to the foods I eat and if they are healthy for my body or not.

In my opinion, the statistics above seem to be quite accurate. on the other hand, I feel as if the cause in overweight people isn't so much that people in America are just lazy, but a lot of mental impact influences obesity. Many people struggle with some things in life that may cause that person or persons to resort to eating to cope. I cant honestly say how to make the problem better other than that the people of America need to have the initiative to go out and exercise, get the right nutrition they need. wellness, to me, is the state your body is in or should be in to live a better life. The only person that can make a change in obesity is the individuals themselves.

I see a huge problem with how many children and adolescents alone are struggling with obesity, let alone everyone over those age groups. I believe that the introduction of fast foods and huge portions has played a major part in the rapid growth of obesity. We can prevent this by better educating children at a young age how to properly feed themselves while ensuring that they are getting the proper vitamins and nutrients that they need. Wellness means that your overall health is good which includes your physical and mental health.

I think that the stat above is true because many people in the United States are becoming over wieght. I think that the fast food restautants have are part of this major chance. That food is full of oil that is not always good for you. We can prevent this by not eating McDonalds everyday. Exercising helps too, when you exercise you can keep doing a activity longer than poeple that dont exercise. I think that wellness is important for everyone and should always imporve.

  44. I think that its pretty bad that so many people are letting themselves get fat. Most people are just too lazy to do anything about their weight or they dont care. People could excersize regularly and get better eating habits.
